Teaching Dogs to "Heel"
In my dog training courses, dogs learn how to
"Heel" by your side when you are walking them.  
Your dog is taught to walk along side your left leg at
all times.  Your dog will move smoothly along with
you, changing his or her pace to yours!  Dogs will
not be out in front of you, forging ahead nor will
they be swaying back and forth from side to side, a
dangerous behavior since you could easily trip
over the dog!  Dogs that learn how to "Heel"
properly at your side are a JOY to take for a walk.  
Notice how this group of dogs are walking beside
their owner's left knee and NOT pulling ahead on
their leashes!
